Housesteads is what people picture when they imagine a Roman fort

• because it is one, more completely than anywhere else in Britain. Perched on the wall’s dramatic central ridge, it held about 800 soldiers for nearly three centuries, and enough of it survives that the tour of it is a tour of a working garrison: gates, granaries with their ventilation stubs, the hospital, the commander’s house, and the famous communal latrines that every school group remembers longest.

Tickets, plainly

About £14.50 for adults at the gate, with online advance booking cheaper in season - and free to English Heritage and National Trust members, because the site is NT-owned and EH-managed (a very English arrangement that changes nothing for visitors). The walk up from the car park is a genuine half-mile climb; the view from the ramparts explains instantly why the Romans put it there.

Vindolanda (run by its own independent trust, separate ticket) sits just behind the wall and yields the writing tablets - birthday invitations and boot requisitions from real garrison hands - plus live digs most summers. One day: Housesteads plus the crag walk. Two days: Vindolanda earns its own morning, and the full-day tour threads the pair with a specialist doing the connecting.
